Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
We designed and installed specialist screening systems, including Hydrolox-engineered polymer screens, achieving operational excellence while meeting stringent regulatory requirements for screening and wash water management.
Enisca Browne was appointed by South East Water to design and install specialist screening systems at Hazards Green WTW, meeting the UK’s Eel Regulations (2009) to protect the European eel population while maintaining safe operations.
The team installed a duty/standby vertical screen at the Wallers Haven abstraction point, featuring a Hydrolox polymer system, wash water management, and a custom steel structure designed with Kent Structural & Architectural Ltd. Careful planning was essential due to the site’s SSSI status.
Full compliance with UK Eel Regulations and environmental best practices
No negative impact on surrounding wildlife and water quality
Successful protection of European eel population at abstraction point
Environmental Sensitivity
Operating in an SSSI required strict environmental compliance. Enisca Browne worked closely with the Environment Agency to meet all regulations and protection standards.
Reduced Site Impact
Off-site fabrication and modular construction minimised on-site activity, protecting the local ecosystem.
Uninterrupted Operations
Works were carefully sequenced to keep the plant fully operational throughout the project.
Through environmental expertise, technical innovation, and careful project management, Enisca Browne successfully delivered a screening solution that protects the European eel population while maintaining the operational efficiency of Hazards Green WTW. The project demonstrates how infrastructure improvements can be delivered in environmentally sensitive areas with zero negative impact, establishing a benchmark for similar works across the water industry. The completed system ensures full regulatory compliance and contributes to the long-term sustainability of both water resources and wildlife conservation.
Borehole Installation and Pumping Station in Walthamstow
Enisca Browne delivered two complex infrastructure projects: the Runleywood Borehole for Affinity Water and a pumping station at Walthamstow Wetlands for Thames Water.
Water Treatment Works Upgrade at Arlington
Enisca Browne was appointed by South East Water to deliver a £8.25 million upgrade at Arlington Water Treatment Works, modernising infrastructure and improving efficiency at the 1972-built facility.
